CFLA Seeks Reversal of N.C. Same-sex Adoption Case
The Christian Family Law Association joined with The American College of Pediatricians, the Christian Action League of North Carolina, the North Carolina Family Policy Council, and NC4Marriage in filing an amicus curiae brief to the North Carolina Supreme Court in Boseman v. Jarrell. Lloyd Kelso, founder of CFLA, teamed with Julee T. Flood, Deborah J. Dewart, and Tami Fitzgerald in researching the law and writing the brief which sought to reverse the North Carolina Court of Appeals' August 2009 decision upholding a same-sex adoption in North Carolina. In 2010, the North Carolina Supreme Court agreed with CFLA's position and held the trial court lacked subject matter jurisdiction to grant a same-sex adoption that was not permited by North Carolina adoption laws, holding the adoption void ab initio. Our thanks to all who worked to obtain this result.
Kelso Speaks to CLS Student Chapter at UNC-CH
Lloyd Kelso, founder of CFLA, spoke to the Student Chapter of the Christian Legal Society at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on January 14, 2010. Mr. Kelso spoke to the students about the importance of maintaining integrity in the legal profession through conducting law practice as a ministry. While speaking to approximately 20 students who attended the meeting, Mr. Kelso told the students that before entering seminary he had viewed being a lawyer as a secular profession rather than a sacred calling. However, during seminary he began to view all work in life as sacred, including the practice of law. Mr. Kelso encouraged students to be transparent in all of their activities to maintain good character. Mr. Kelso ended the 50 minute meeting by answering student questions and encouraging students to continue to take a stand for Jesus in their student life and upon graduation as an attorney.

Formation of CFLA Announced in N.C. Lawyers Weekly
On July 20, 2009, North Carolina's most popular legal newspaper, Lawyers Weekly, published CFLA's first press release announcing its formation. Gregory Froom, managing editor of Lawyers Weekly, noted that a number of North Carolina attorneys are now implementing the Christian faith in their professional life, and viewing their law practices as ministries. Mr. Froom forwarded to Mr. Kelso a series of Lawyers Weekly articles published in early 2009 that interviewed some of these Christian attorneys.
CFLA began to seek new members on July 1, 2009. If enough members join by the end of 2009, a retreat will be scheduled for new members in early 2010. We are hopeful that the first retreat will be held at the Billy Graham Training Center at The Cove.
Lloyd Kelso, founder of the Christian Family Law Association, signed the first Statement of Faith and became the first official member of CFLA on July 1, 2009.
Congratulations to Kimberly Gruber for becoming the first attorney member of CFLA from the great State of Texas. Thank you Ms. Gruber!
